研究テーマ

I am interested in studying adaptations, and the ways that stories are transformed across mediums, time periods, and cultures. I have focused most heavily on movies directed by Alfred Hitchcock and the ways those movies relate to their source materials.

研究概要

My research focuses on Alfred Hitchcock films adapted from novels or short stories. Studying the ways that stories and themes are transformed when a text is made into a film lets us understand how different contexts and mediums affect meaning. In my PhD dissertation, “Webs of Signification in Hitchcock’s Adaptations: An Analysis of Interconnecting Tropes in The Lodger and Vertigo,” I analyzed the Hitchcock films The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) and Vertigo (1958) alongside their source texts. I have also investigated the ways that video games, specifically Detroit: Become Human (2018), relates to and is influenced by other, more classic literary works, such as Karel ?apek's 1920 stage play, R.U.R. Most recently, I investigated the ways that ideas surrounding Shinto purification may have influenced Hayao Miyazaki's adaptation of Howl's Moving Castle.

活用可能な分野(社会への貢献等)

Film and literature pose questions concerning the most fundamental aspects of human experience, and offer the opportunity to discuss and to investigate a myriad of topics which will always be relevant to contemporary culture. The topics examined through my research often include but are by no means limited to issues of gender, violence, embodied identity, and the limitations of visual and linguistic expression.
